But just to put it in sentence form, calories are a unit of measurement just like an inch or a table spoon. They are the amount of energy yielded when the body breaks down the foods that you ingest. The more the calories a food has, the more energy it will provide you with. However, when you eat a lot of calories, more than the bodies is in need of, it stores the excess in the form of fat.

Looking at calories as a form of energy, it is quite clear why we need it. But we still have to ensure that we maintain its intake at a healthy level. To do this, you can calculate the amount of calories that you may need each day. To do this, you have to consider you level of activity throughout the day. If you are a male who is moderately active, then you should multiply your weight by 15. The result will give you a rough idea of you expected daily calorie intake. On the other hand, females who are moderately active should multiply their weights by 12, females who are inactive by 12 and males who are inactive by 13. This will help you to stay within the healthy bracket of calorie intake each day to avoid gaining weight.
Overall opinion on fats is wrong
Going back to the fats, many have a very bad perception of this nutrient. Partly because of the bad publicity that it has been getting from the media from the overweight people and the health problems that it has been associate with. However, the body does need the fats. It actually has several uses for the body which makes them a very important nutrient apart from providing the body with energy in a high concentrated form.
The fat helps the body to transport as well as to store and absorb fat soluble vitamins D, E, A and K. Lacking fat will mean that you will not have these fat soluble vitamins that regulate the heart rate, blood clotting, blood pressure and the constriction of the blood vessels.
In addition, the fat provides the major internal organs with insulation and a protective cover. These vital organs are such as the heart, kidneys, liver and several other major organs.
In addition, the essential fatty acids, such as the omega-6 and the omega-3 fats that cannot be synthesized by the body are usually supplied through the diet. Having dull hair that lacks life can be a sign that you lack these fats.
